Karlsruher Majolika is the oldest and only ceramic manufactory still in production in Germany. It was founded in 1901 by the artists Hans Thoma and Wilhelm Süß based on the idea of Grand Duke Friedrich I of Baden.
The artists wanted to revive the "majolica technique", a special glazing process that dates back to 15th century Italy, which in turn was imported from Spain.
Due to the idyllic location on the edge of the palace gardens, only a few visitors found their way to the manufactory, gallery and museum. Since 2001, the "Blue Ray" of 1,645 blue majolica tiles has led from the castle tower of Karlsruhe Palace right through the palace garden to the manufactory building. It is located on one of the old axes that is important for the layout of the city and draws the attention of visitors to the palace gardens to the production site.
