The gasometer is an interesting industrial monument - a historic bell-shaped gas holder over 100 years old, 40 metres high and 40 metres wide - which is one of the last of its kind. It was saved from being scrapped and put to a new use through refurbishment in keeping with its listed status, combined with high-quality, modern architecture.The
result is the new tourist highlight of the Goldstadt - the Gasometer Pforzheim as a unique exhibition and event location.The giant circular image by Berlin artist Yadegar Asisi takes visitors on a journey of discovery through the tropical rainforest. As if in a clearing, the view opens up far into the Amazonian landscape - to the imposing treetops with up to ten metre high board roots, to fascinating plants and animals, from poisonous strawberry frogs and mud-licking butterflies to elegant jaguars and climbing ocelots. In the cylindrical building, visitors can view the panorama on different levels: from three central visitor platforms at a height of six, twelve and 15 metres, there are always new perspectives. Visitors explore the strange world of the rainforest, supported by an impressive light installation, a realistic soundscape and music composed especially for this project by Eric Babak. The accompanying exhibition offers the opportunity to approach the complex system of the rainforest in a direct way and to become aware of the immense importance of this natural area worthy of protection.
