The architects Hermann Reinhard Alker and Hermann Zelt designed the minimalist, functional little St Matthew's Church. It was consecrated as a Protestant church in 1927 and was originally only built as an emergency church for the south-west of the city, as inflation meant that no major building work was possible.

Emil Sutor (crucifix and angel in the vestibule) and August Babberger were responsible for the artistic design. The floor tiles had a pattern of red bricks, the walls were kept in grey-blue tones and a brown-red pattern was chosen for the ceiling.
