Federal Public Prosecutor General at the Federal Court of Justice
In the area of state security, the Federal Public Prosecutor General at the Federal Court of Justice in Karlsruhe is the highest law enforcement authority in the Federal Republic of Germany.
In the Federal Republic of Germany, the judiciary is basically a matter for the federal states; the Federal Public Prosecutor's Office is the only federal public prosecutor's office. The office was established in 1950. The remit of the Federal Public Prosecutor General at the Federal Court of Justice essentially includes the first-instance prosecution of crimes against the internal security (e.g. acts of terrorist violence) and external security (e.g. espionage and treason) of the Federal Republic of Germany. A memorial stone on the corner of Hans-Thoma- and Moltkestraße commemorates the assassination of former Federal Public Prosecutor General Siegfried Buback and his companions by RAF terrorists in April 1977.
