The apartment block at Haid-und-Neu-Straße 8 is a particularly impressive example. Designed by architect Franz Wolff and built between 1904 and 1906, its curved gable shape, ornamental details, balcony railings and oval windows in the attic demonstrate the Art Nouveau architects' endeavours to create a complete work of art. In the immediate vicinity of the then modern Haid-und Neu sewing machine factory and the Hoepfner brewery, which was already a large brewery at the time, this building, like many others in Karlsruhe's Oststadt district, still demonstrates bourgeois pride at the turn of the century.
