Staatliche Hochschule für Gestaltung
The Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design was opened on 15 April 1992 as a reform university. It was founded together with the ZKM | Centre for Art and Media in Karlsruhe between 1989 and 1992 by Heinrich Klotz. This combination of teaching, research and exhibition institutions corresponds to the artistic and pedagogical task of relating the traditional arts to media technology and electronic production processes.
A unique combination of artistic, creative and theoretical subjects makes studying at the HfG Karlsruhe particularly versatile and exciting for future professional activities. With communication design, product design, media art, exhibition design and scenography as well as art studies, media theory and media philosophy, the HfG presents itself as a special type of art academy, which has developed increasingly in Europe, the USA and Japan since the early 1990s.
What all degree programmes have in common is the interdisciplinary project work that has been practised from the very beginning. The HfG's teaching concept thus enables students to optimally combine theory and practice. The cooperation with the neighbouring ZKM | Centre for Art and Media also illustrates the interdisciplinary orientation of the university. Internationally renowned professors and artists stand for excellent teaching and the international profile of the HfG. Well-equipped studios and workshops guarantee an extraordinary and innovative culture of experimentation.
